A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a surgically implanted, mechanical pump-type device. It helps maintain the pumping ability of a damaged heart. People awaiting a heart transplant may have a weak heart, that deteriorates and becomes unable to pump enough blood to sustain life. An LVAD can help a weak heart and enable the patient to wait for a transplant. In this illustration, a tube pulls blood from the left ventricle into a pump. The pump then sends blood into the aorta. This effectively helps the weakened ventricle.
