David Purnell was Chief Staff Medical/Surgical Illustrator at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for 19 years. His experience spans working with clinical, surgical and research professionals.
Before accepting the position at Sloan-Kettering, Mr. Purnell received a Master of Arts Degree in Medical Illustration from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The graduate program included an internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. In the intervening time between his graduate program and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Mr. Purnell worked for The Johns Hopkins Hospital, doing cineradiography based illustrations for the Department of Diagnostic Radiology.
In October 1992, Mr. Purnell chose to leave Memorial Sloan-Kettering in order to open his own studio in Minnesota. NEW YORK WEST is located on seven acres of beautiful woodland in the greater Minneapolis area, near Northfield.
Mr. Purnell is a professional member of the Association of Medical Illustrators.

COLGATE ORAL PHARMACEUTICALS (via Sudler & Hennessey Advertising Agency, NYC)(April 2000): Brochure cover illustrations for Colgate PreviDent 5000 Plus, showing dental caries resulting from various factors. Also, September 2000, Colgate ad illustration for their battery operated Actibrush.
COMPENDIUM MAGAZINE (Dental Learning Systems Co., Inc.): Cover illustrations for the March, June, August and November 2000 and May 2001 issues. The illustration for the March issue pertains to a dental restoration case study, featured in this isue, that used a combined implant/orthodontic restoration strategy. The illustration for the June issue pertains to the link that has been found between periodontal disease and heart attack. The November issue pertains to the link between periodontal disease and diabetes.
MEDTRONIC, INC.: Illustrations for product brochure on treatment of pain in cancer patients using intrathecal morphine infusion, delivered by MedtronicÆs implantable, programmable infusion pump (1996). Illustrations for Hepatic Intraarterial Infusion Therapy (regional chemo using programmable SynchroMed Infusion System) for Liver Metastases from Colorectal Cancer (1998).

Although proficient with traditional artistic media such as airbrush, gouache, watercolor, oil and pen & ink, Mr. PurnellÆs nearly exclusive medium is computer rendered art, using the Macintosh platform. Computer graphics software used: Corel Painter (simulates traditional media), Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, etc.), Strata 3D pro (3D and 3D Animation), Poser (3D human forms), DAZ Studio (3D) and others.
