During the cardiac cycle, the pressure within the heart chambers rises and falls. In atrial systole (contraction), the atria empty as the semilunar valves close and the bicuspid valves open, while the ventricles fill with blood. In atrial diastole (relaxation), the atria fill with blood as the ventricles contract and the tricuspid and bicuspid valves close and the pulmonary and aortic semilunar valves open.
